Tuesday. David Wiesner. New York: Clarion Books, 1991. 30 pages. $15.95 (Hardcover). ISBN 0-395-55113-7. PreK-1.
Caldecott Award winner David Wiesner welcomes the youngest readers to a world where lily pads take flight and pigs can fly in TUESDAY. It appears to be just another Tuesday in this no name town, but right before the clocks strike eight the toads in the pond begin to hover, their lily pads acting like magic carpets. These realistic bulbous toads are soon soaring through the air startling birds, people, and dogs. When the sun rises there is general confusion among the neighborhood as lily pads cover the road and a group of toads sulk bored in the pond. Next Tuesday, however, is not too far away. Weisner uses a minimal amount of text to create a timeline of story that will never get old. The large, double page spreads use rich colors to create awe inspiring patterns, scenery, and facial expressions. The illustrations seem to capture the movement of the night and will have readers wishing the sun had slumbered a few more hours. Imagination is the crux of this story, and readers will love seeing the quirky world of Weisner while being encouraged to explore ideas of their own. Perfect for the very young, reluctant reader, or those who may have forgotten to dream. Highly Recommended
